About

Museum Reinhard Ernst

Museum Reinhard Ernst is one of the very few museums in the world devoted exclusively to abstract art, which makes its collection rare. Many of the artists in the Reinhard Ernst Collection are among the most important of the 20th and 21st centuries, who had a defining influence on the development of abstraction in art.
The museum’s central goal is to help contemporary visitors enjoy the “adventure of abstract art”. It highlights how the concept of art changed in the latter half of the 20th century.

The museum was designed by architect Fumihiko Maki (1928-2024), winner of the 1993 Pritzker prize. Maki designed a museum to celebrate art and the shared experience of culture. Other Maki’s works include the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, 4 World Trade Centre in New York, House of Hope in Natori, Spiral Building in Tokyo and more. The Museum Reinhardt Ernst is the only museum designed by Maki in Europe.

All talk sessions will take place in the Maki forum, while the poster sessions and breaks will take place in the museum foyer, making sure VSAV attendees are constantly surrounded by inspiring, stimulating and thought provoking art and architecture.

Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden is the capital of the German state of Hesse, and the second-largest Hessian city after Frankfurt am Main. It is located only approximately 20 km west of Frankfurt am Main. Wiesbaden forms a conurbation with a population of around 500,000 with the neighbouring city of Mainz, across the river Rhine and the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Wiesbaden lies in the Rheingau wine-growing region, one of Germany's 13 wine regions. It is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, with 15 mineral springs—14 of which are hot springs—in the city centre. Travelling back in time, you would have missed VSAC, but you could have bathed with figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms.

Wiesbaden has been called the "Nice of the North" because of its climate and architecture. Historical, cultural, international, but still welcoming and cosy, Wiesbaden form an ideal host city for VSAC 2025!

How to get to Wiesbaden

Flight

If you are landing at the Frankfurt Airport - FRA (not to be confused with Frankfurt - Hahn (HHN) airport, which is 125km away), getting to Wiesbaden couldn’t be easier. Simply take the S8 or S9 local trains from the Frankfurt Airport Regional train station, ride 8-11 stops and you’ll be in Wiesbaden city centre within 30-40 minutes. The museum is located within 15 minutes’ walk from the train station.

Train

Located centrally in Germany (and Europe), Wiesbaden is well connected to most European cities. We recommend using the Deutsche Bahn website or DB Navigator app to book your tickets. It is advisable to book your tickets early as prices can increase significantly over time.

Accommodation in Wiesbaden

We are glad to offer a range of hotels in Wiesbaden, reserved exclusively for VSAC attendees until July 21st. Some of the hotels are only a 2-3 minute walk from our venue, allowing you for extra invaluable rest. Please find full list of hotels HERE

Traveling between Wiesbaden and Mainz

If you are attending ECVP and plan to stay in Mainz for the duration of both conferences, you should be able to reach the Museum Reinhardt Ernst by bus or S (local train) only within 30 minutes from Mainz city centre. You’d be crossing one of the two most important rivers of Europe twice daily
